Stream Designation Protection

Along with Center for Coalfield Justice and PennFuture, MWA has now challenged two proposed stream redesignation attempts in Greene County. The first, from Consol, attempted to redesignate Grinnage Run from high-quality warm water fishes (HQ-WWF) to warm water fishes (WWF). The second, from Foundation Coal, attempted to do the same for streams in the South Fork Tenmile Creek watershed. We are awaiting DEP's recommendations on both petitions, but you can read the studies authored to support our position that these redesignation attempts are unlawful and misguided, and we intend to continue to monitor attempts by industry to lower the level of protection for area streams.

Fishable Swimmable Waters Campaign

MWA's recently launched Fishable Swimmable Waters Campaign ("Fishable Swimmable") focuses on increases public awareness of safe recreational opportunities in the Indian Creek watershed, while at the same time advocating for improved stream health in areas that are currently polluted. The campaign will also highlight MWA's ongoing restoration efforts in the watershed. Look for upcoming events to include: distribution of brochures on water quality in the Indian Creek watershed, stocking of fish in Indian Creek, educational signage of stream conditions, and 'drains to creek' labeling for storm drains leading to the creek.

Laurel Hill Creek Among America's Most Endangered Rivers

MWA Along with the Chestnut Ridge chapter of Trout Unlimited recently nominated Laurel Hill Creek for American Rivers' 2009 Most Endangered Rivers designation. Laurel Hill was included as America's 7th Most Endangered River, helping to highlight the growing demand for water in the watershed as well as the exceedance of the safe yield for water withdrawal in the watershed. True Cost of Coal

Our True Cost of Coal project seeks to educate the public about the true cost of using coal as a fuel source. As part of this project we have copies of our True Cost of Coal booklet available (please note: this is a large file) for download and also have a True Cost presentation available. We are available to give this presentation but can also make it available with presentation notes for members of the public to present. Contact us for more details.

www.thedirtylie.com

Through our involvement with Waterkeeper Alliance, we were able to take part in their launch of an exciting and innovative web-based campaign, The Dirty Lie (www.thedirtylie.com), to counter the “clean coal” con and to inspire an energy policy that rejects this archaic and dangerous source of energy and embraces safe, renewable sources instead.

Visit www.thedirtylie.com to learn how you can make a difference in your community and join us in our fight against coal.
