Rustic Ridge Blasting Update

On December 21, 2017, CME Engineering sent out a Notice of Pre-Blast Survey on behalf of LCT Energy for the Rustic Ridge Deep Mine. The notice indicated that LCT Energy intends to begin blasting to open up the portal for the deep mine on January 22nd. However, according to the DEP Blasting Inspector, LCT Energy has not submitted the necessary materials for their blasting permit, which is required before any blasting takes place. The Blasting Inspector stated that these materials often take at least a month to review. As a result, it is highly unlikely that blasting will take place this month...

EcoSaurus Coloring Contest

The County Line Road EcoSaurus near the entrance of the proposed Rustic Ridge deep coal mine has been stirring up a lot of conversation in our community. Many people have asked to keep the discussion going by building additional dinosaurs nearby the original installation. Before we do that, we’d like your input on what these new dinosaurs should look like! So, Mountain Watershed Association will be hosting an EcoSaur coloring contest for ages 12 and under. Make a Year End Contribution to Ensure a Successful 2018

As 2017 comes to a close we are reflecting on an incredibly successful year for our organization and our river community. This success would not have been possible without your generous support. Your past investments have made the following possible: We secured Exceptional Value status, reserved for Pennsylvania’s cleanest streams, for Stony Run in the Indian Creek watershed as a result of a petition we submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection. This designation will result in more safeguards for this beautiful...

Economic Impacts of the Rustic Ridge Deep Mine

Looking to get away from the city of Greensburg, Jennifer Bertha and her family have had their hopes set on moving to a quiet mountain town. When they found a house for sale on Ruff Lane in Donegal, the family felt they had found the perfect match.  “The house checked off for us across the board. We loved it, and it was move-in ready,” Jennifer noted. That was until their real estate agent informed them that the home was in the footprint of LCT Energy’s Rustic Ridge Deep Mine, with the entrance to the mine just over 1,000 feet away. The seller of a home and their agent are legally required...
