The Mountain Watershed Association, Inc. will hold a dedication ceremony to celebrate the recent completion of both the Anna and Steve Gdosky Indian Creek Restoration Project, which is now treating the single largest abandoned mine discharge in the Indian Creek Watershed, as well as the Kooser Waterline Project, which extended public water supplies to Kooser and Tabey Roads in rural Fayette County.

The Anna and Steve Gdosky Indian Creek Restoration Project, treating the Kalp discharge, is now online and is expected to restore over 8 miles of Indian Creek.  This treatment system won the U.S. Department of Interior Office of Surface Mining’s 2007 Appalachian Regional Award for its innovative approach to abandoned mine drainage abatement.

The Kooser-Tabey Road Waterline Project was spearheaded by local residents, including MWA board member Virgil Shaffer.  Residents in this area have struggled with the quality and quantity of their private water supplies, which were degraded by mining over 30 years ago.  The Mountain Watershed Association orchestrated the project, which brought public drinking water to over 40 families.

“Dedicating these two projects will be very exciting for the Mountain Watershed Association and its supporters and partners,” stated Beverly Braverman, MWA’s Executive Director.  “They are another step toward restoring our community and our environment from the ravages of coal mining.”
